World Cup became a social-media mammoth

The Football World Cup became a social-media giant. Facebook announced the final tournament generated more than one billion interactions making it the largest event in the platform's history.

 

The World Cup also came in the right moment because social-media is at its best so far. There is no doubt that four years ago, Facebook, Twitter Instagram and every other platform out there were smaller. Let's go back to the fact. In those 90 minutes USA played Portugal, the Cristiano Ronaldo name was mentioned 1.5 million times on twitter while, US' star, Clint Dempsey almost three times less. The Football World cup isn't played only in Brazil, but everywhere else on the planet where there's a bit of Internet.

 

According to FIFA, its mobile app called “Global Stadium” designed too keep update on the World Cup gathered in excess of 230 million users in less than one month. One week into the final tournament, Facebook reported more than 450 million posts, likes or comments related to the World Cup. The winter Olympics in Sochi or the Superbowl gathered in the same time span less than 200 million so there's no contest here. Even more impressive are the figures coming from Twitter. Hundreds of million of tweets and retweets all tied with the globan event in Brazil.

 

The coverage has everything to do with the football stars involved. For example, Brazilian star Neymar generated seven of the most popular ten posts from the tournament so far. According to FIFA, Lionel Messi's name was mentioned more than 11 million times in the first two weeks of the tournament. He was closely followed by Neymar with 10 million hits and Cristiano Ronaldo with 8.9 million hits.

 

Having this in mind just think there is still a week left from the World Cup and a final to play. The 2014 Football World Cup will go down in history as a social-media giant. At least until the next world cup in 2018.
