US government hacked by a Chinese group
A new hacking incident that happened in March was revealed by the New York Times. A group of Chinese hackers broke into the US Government network agency that keeps personal information of federal employees.
According to sources close to the case, the group of hackers aimed at the files of the most important employees that had the top-secret security clearances. Allegedly, the cyber criminals managed to gain partial access at the database of the Office of Personnel Management before the breach was detected. Immediately after the security department blocked the network.
It is still unclear how deep was the breach and the level of information obtained by the hackers. US officials have also declined to comment on the incident. Recently, five Chinese military officers were charged in the US for hacking into American companies to steal trade secrets.
In response, China shut down a project for cyber security in which USA was its main partner. Despite the big tensions between the two countries, yesterday China and USA started the annual “Strategic and Economic Dialogue” project and it is believed cyber-security is one of the main subjects.
