iPhone used successfully in medical treatment
Researchers have found a brand new use for iPhones, one that few or maybe none would have thought of.
They modified an iPhone 4S and used it as a portable artificial pancreas that successfully regulates blood sugar levels for people with Type 1 diabetes.
Moreover, the iPhone performed a lot better, as compared to currently used medical tools, in helping those with diabetes keep their disease under control.
The patient has a sensor implanted near his abdomen. The sensors regularly sends information regarding its carrier’s blood glucose levels to the mobile device. The phone then calculates and sends via pumps the correct dosage of insulin and glucagon.
Patients can also introduce the meals they are about to eat and the device will re-calculate and deliver the correct dose, thus allowing people with diabetes eat meals that would otherwise be harmful to them.
The system has already been successfully tested on patients and could be made available to all beginning with 2017.
