CIA funny-tweet becomes viral
This month marked a first ever for the American national security agency, CIA: they released their first tweet.
Although the CIA is a late-bloomer, probably being the last to join a social media platform, the agency surprised everyone with a comical tweet that reflected their specific secretive manner.
At 1:49, on Friday, @CIA tweeted: ‘We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet.’
Needless to say that the message immediately sparked social media hysteria as it was re-tweeted 85,000 times in less than two hours and the agency gained over 105,000 followers on the spot.
Many couldn’t resist the urge of being sarcastic and tweeted the agency messages such as: ‘How does it feel to be followed for once?’
In a move to brighten up its secretive spy agency reputation, CIA also joined Facebook and has been posting declassified documents and artifacts from its museum.
‘By expanding to these platforms, CIA will be able to more directly engage with the public and provide information on CIA's mission, history, and other developments,’ said CIA Director John Brennan.
Still, the agency has some catching-up to do as its rivals have been on social media platforms years before it: the National Security Agency has a Twitter account since 2009 and FBI since 2008.
