USA snatches a precious victory from Ghana
USA is tied with Germany at the top of group G after winning its debut match at the World Cup against Ghana. John Brooks' header late in the game delivered the victory and the three points to USA.
The start of the game was electric. US' captain, Clint Dempsey scored after 29 seconds and put his team up by one. It was the fastest goal at this edition of the World Cup. Statistics show it was also the fifth fastest goal in World Cup history.
Dempsey was later punished by an adversary for his performance. A one on one duel left Dempsey with a broken and bloody nose after getting hit with the boot in the face.
Ghana and USA went on and played fast football and both teams missed a few good chances. Andre Ayew leveled the score late in the game and it looked like both teams will settle with the draw. Despite fatigue was installed in both teams, USA managed to snatch the victory thanks to John Brooks' header four minutes before the end of the game.
“We have a great spirit and fight until the last minute. It was a grind but it was a wonderful one at the end of the day. We trained over and over on set-pieces and it was well deserved,” said Jurgen Klinsmann after the match.
USA will face Portugal in the second round of Group G on June 22 at Arena da Amazonia in Manaus.
