The 2014 Wimbledon is full of surprises
The entire world has its eyes on Brazil as the Football World Cup enfolds, but Europe has its own grass pitch tournament. It is called the Wimbledon and so far it has been full of surprises.
The biggest names to be knocked out of the famous tournament came from the women's competition. World number two and second seed Na Li was beaten in straight sets by Zahlavova Strycova 7-6,7-6. The sock of the day came when Serena William, WTA number one and first seed at the Wimbledon was knock out by Alize Cornet in three sets.
“I was very excited for an hour, I couldn't believe it and still can't believe it actually. It feels great and it shows I really improved these last years. I worked on my forehand which was my weakness on this surface and the way a I move. There is no secret. It's all about hard work,” said Cornet after the surprising victory.
Romanian Simona Halep became the tournament favorite, exactly like it happened a month ago in Paris at Roland Garros. Fourth and fifth seed, Agnieszka Radwanska and Maria Sharapova are new viewed with the second and third chance of winning the prestigious tournament.
In the men's competition, the most important names all qualified for the “Round of 16”. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer made it through.
