Germany edges into the quarter finals
Germany struggled more than two hours to secure its spot in the quarter finals at the Football World Cup. It was the third match in the “round of 16” that needed extra time. Germany will battle France for a place in the semi finals.
Despite being viewed as a surprise and an underdog, Algeria played very well and even had a few good chances in the first half. The Africans even scored, but the goal was called off because of an offside position. Germany's stars were helpless and Algeria kept the sheet clean all the way to the 90th minute.
The clash entered extra time and set a new record. Half of the matches in the knockout stage needed extra time. This only shows the balance between all qualified teams. However, the pressure was to big and Algeria's defence snapped. Schurrle scored two minutes into extra time and Ozil doubled the advantage after 120 minute. Algeria managed to score once into stoppage extra time, but Algeria's fate was already sealed.
Germany qualified for the quarter finals where it will face France.
