Jorge Pinto: We practiced penalties!
Two out of the four “Round of 16” matches at the World Cup needed extra time and penalty shootouts to establish who advances through. It wasn't a surprise Costa Rica knocked out Greece. They practiced penalty shots.
The Americans did not miss a single penalty shot and that is not a coincidence. “We practiced penalties before and we had studied the opposition and that's why we scored 100 percent. It was a very difficult and dramatic match,” said Jorge Luis Pinto, Costa Rica manager.
Keylor Navas was close to save two penalties before, but eventually saved one and sent his team into the quarter finals. “We are making history. This win is for everyone in Costa Rica. This is an incredible emotion that we all feel and the win is very important for us and for the whole country. We are really proud,” added Pinto.
The first “Round of 16” match that needed penalty shots was Brazil – Chile and the Netherlands was very close to enter extra time, but two late goals by Sneijder and Huntelaar secured the team's qualification.
