The man who threw a banana at Alves was arrested
The Spanish police arrested the man who threw a banana at Brazilian football player Dani Alves. Barcelona player started a world wide anti-racism campaign after eating the fruit thrown at him.
After analyzing surveillance recordings, the Police in Villareal identified the man responsible for the racism gesture. 26 year old David Campayo Lleo was taken into custody last night in Spain's Castellon province. He was immediately charged with “inciting hatred” and he is now facing three years in prison.
After his arrest, Villareal FC announced the club has banned Campayo Lleo for life so he will no longer be able to enter El Madrigal Stadium. Also the club stripped his Villareal membership.
The 26 year old threw a banana at Dani Alves in the 75th minute of the Villareal – FC Barcelona duel from La Liga. The Brazilian winger picked up the banana, peeled it off and eat it. His gesture was praised by media around the world and sparked a world wide anti-racism campaign called “We are all monkeys, NO to racism!”. Former football players and coaches, showbiz stars, news anchors and even the Prime Minister of Italy joined the campaign and posted photos of them eating a banana.
