Dani Alves destroys racism gesture

Dani Alves made it to the cover of almost all European sports magazines after last night's game. Although he did not score in the 3-2 Barcelona victory over Villareal, he pulled off a stunt that got him admiration.

While trying to execute a corner kick, a banana was thrown at him from the stands as a racism gesture. He picked the fruit up, peeled it off and took a bite out of it and then kicked the ball. His gesture was praised by Spanish media and most European media. Mundodeportivo wrote. “The Brazilian took the racist gesture in the chin, nonchalantly picking up the fruit, Peeling it and taking a bite. Alves had the last laugh as Barca roared back from 2-0 down to win”.

The Brazilian international said after the game racism gestures are present in football. “You have to take it with a dose of humour. If you don't give them importance they don't achieve their objective,” he added.

A few other Brazilian player all praised Alves' gesture. Lucas Leiva wrote on twitter: “Congratulations on your attitude. We are all together on this fight against racism.” Team mate Neymar was even more radically and uploaded a photo of him eating a banana on his official Instagram page.

Barcelona managed to pull off a huge comeback after being down 0-2, the Catalans went on to win 3-2.
