Premier League adopts the 'vanishing spray'
The World Cup in Brazil brought two technologies into the game of football: “goal line technology” and “vanishing spray”. While the goal line technology is way to expensive for domestic competitions, the spray has a bright future.
A few weeks ago numerous bodies representing various football competitions in Europe announced they will introduce the spray in the 2014-2015 season. Primera Division, Serie A, UFA Champions League and Europa League will all have this marker. Eventually, Premier League officials gave in and confirmed the British league will adopt the spray.
“After closely monitoring the World Cup in Brazil, it was obvious the spray brought numerous benefits for both teams and also referees, but also for all the fans,” said Richard Scudamore, executive chief of the Premier League.
Officials with the Bundesliga said they are still thinking about a possible introduction of the spray in the upcoming season. The spray has been used with success for more than 10 years in the Brazilian League.
