Terrorist attack in China
At least two bombs blasted last night through a Chinese railway station in the city of Urumki, killing 3 people and injuring 79 other.
The explosion ensued after a swarm of attackers armed with knives began stabbing people.
‘Some people were chopping others with their knives, and then came the sound of the explosion, which was deafening,’ reported a witness.
Out of the three people that died, two are believed to be attackers.
‘At the moment, it is acknowledged to be a terrorist attack. What is yet to be found out is who did this and for what purpose under whose instigation,’ said Xinhua, an official news agency.
The attack might be linked to the Uighurs, an ethnic group known for their clashes with Beijing. If this proves to be true, then the group has changed its usual attack pattern for the worse: from attacks on police officers and officials to larger scale attacks on civilians.
The attack also came as a blow to Xi Jinping, China’s president, reputation. Only a short time ago, he had visited the region and declared it ‘the drum of counterterrorism.’
