Pakistani couple’s throats cut in honor killing
Another Pakistani honor killing had stunned international press with its brutality. A married couple had their throats slit open with butcher knives by the bride’s family because they had married without their families’ consent.
In a village in the Punjab region, 17-years-old Muafia Bibi and her 30-years-old husband, Sajjad Ahmed, were brutally murdered by the bride’s parents, grandfather and two uncles. The two ‘were not beheaded but were killed with the knives and had severe signs of torture on their heads,’ said the local police chief.
The atrocity happened out in the public and witnesses say that, before the bride’s father slit the couple’s throats, he addressed the crowd saying that everyone should stay and watch, even young children.
‘He said they should learn what would happen to them if they married someone of their own choice,’ said one witness.
The police had placed the bride’s male family members under arrest.
The honor killing issues in Pakistan revolted the world after, in the same region, a 20-year-old woman was set on fire for rejecting a marriage proposal and another woman, who was also pregnant, was stoned to death for marrying against her family’s wishes. It later emerged that her chosen husband had killed his former wife in order to marry her.
