Melilla was rushed again by illegal immigrants
Illegal immigrants did not celebrate the May Day. They tried to reach European Union soil. More than 100 people stormed the border between Morocco and the Spanish exclave of Melilla again.
Spanish officials in Melilla confirmed almost 150 illegal immigrants from central African countries tried to jump the fences that borders Melilla. Some of them did not reach the fences before getting arrested by Moroccan police and local media reported they were heard shouting “Freedom! Freedom!”. Three police officers were injured trying to apprehend the immigrants.
Hours later an even larger group of 200 hundred people made an attempt to reach European soil, but they were stopped by border guards. Moroccan authorities said a total of 669 people were arrested and 20 taken to the hospital after hurting themselves trying to jump a barbed wire fence.
Melilla and Ceuta are facing a huge problem regarding illegal immigrants. These two Spanish exclaves share the only land border European Union has with the African Continent. In March, almost 1,000 immigrants tried to jump the triple lair fence that borders Melilla and Morocco. Recently, the Spanish Government agreed to assign 2.1 million euros for improving security at this border.
