Gibraltar is one of the most interesting places in Europe. It's a junction of cultures, languages and geographical landmarks. There are a few things you need to know if you plan a trip to Gibraltar.
The British exclave is located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula. It has a total area of six square kilometers and a population of 30,000 people. Most of them consider themselves Gibraltarians. The stretch of land borders in the north with the Spanish Province of Cadiz and with the Strait of Gibraltar in the South.
The most common recognized landmark of the small region is the Rock of Gibraltar. It's a 400 meter tall rock, made out of limestone. It is also a touristic attraction. Local guides will take you to the top of the rock for 30-50 euros and tell you everything there is to know about it.
Heading up you will also come across a small population of Barbary Macaques. These are the only wild apes or monkeys living in Europe and the species is listed as endangered by IUCN Red List.
Rock of Gibraltar also houses the Great Siege Tunnels. They were dug out by the British in the 18th century and in the 1940s the tunnels were extended to create a fortress. The cave system is 50 km long and it is opened to tourists.
Finally, at the bottom of the Rock rests the main road. It's practically a boulevard packed full with expensive shops. You can find liquor stores, jewelers, expensive clothes and the most common souvenir shops. If you don't have Pounds on you, don't worry, almost all shops accept the Euro also.
