19-year-old flies solo in world tour

Thursday, a 19-year-old American landed his small plane in India’s Nagpur, two months into his around-the-world tour.

The teen plans on becoming the youngest person ever to fly around the world alone in an airplane.

It's been good, actually a lot of fun. I have been to some really interesting places. There have been a few small issues but overall it's been fun,’ said Matt Guthmiller about his journey so far.

More than one month after he took off in his single-engined Beechcraft A36 Bonanza aircraft from San Diego, Guthmiller had already traveled across the US, Europe, the Mediterranean Sea and Egypt.

He is now travelling to Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, the Philippines, Australia and Samoa.

The whole journey consists of 46,700 kilometers with 25 stops across 14 countries.

The current record holder is the Australian Ryan Campbell who, at 19, successfully completed a world tour flying solo in 2013.

Guthmiller will be sixteen days younger than Campbell when his tour will be completed, thus setting a new Guiness World Record.

Guthmiller, who is also a MIT student, plans to raise $250,000 which he wants to donate to Code, org, a non-profit organization that strives to include computer science and programming in the school’s curriculum.
