The mysterious Easter Island

Easter Island is unquestionably one of the most mysterious places on Earth. Mysterious is the arrival of the first humans on the island, 1,200 years ago, from other Polynesian islands. Mysterious are the statues called 'moai', as their structure in temples called 'ahu'.

The island hosts about 4000 inhabitants, from which 2/3 of them are indigenous, the rest coming from the continent.

All the population lives in the only settlement of the island, Hanga Roa. The name of Easter Island has no religious significance, but also commemorates the discovery of the island by the Dutch vessel in an Easter Sunday in 1722. DNA tests showed that the islanders are descendants of travelers coming from Taiwan about hundreds of years ago.

The major points of interest are in the Rapa Nui National Park, which consists of a broad strip of land that spreads on almost all the island's shore. If you are pressed by time, you definitely must see the Rano Raraku career, the place where most of the moai statues were carved and the largest platform on the island of Oahu, Ahu Tongari, which supports 15 moai.

Other attractions are: Ahu Akiva platform, which supports 7 preserved statues, Anakena beach with palm trees and a platform with seven moai, Te Pahu caves, which are connected through a lava tunnel of 150m, ahu Ovahe Vinapu beach. These are just a few suggestions, the entire island showing places of interest.
