Galapagos Islands, an unique destination

Galápagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean are some of the most isolated islands in the world. Their isolation led to the development of a unique and unusual wide range of animals and plants that sometimes had a huge impact in discerning the biological evolution. Officially called Archipiélago de Colón (Columbus Archipelago), they are now known as the Galápagos Islands and the Turtle Islands.

In the Pacific Ocean, 1000 km west of the coast of South America, there is a unique archipelago of islands. Originally called Charmed Islands, The archipelago hosts a unique flora and fauna on earth, the whole being called the greatest natural laboratory of evolution of species.

The Galápagos Islands climate has two seasons: the rainy season from January to July, and the dry season from July to December. The coldest period is between May and July when temperatures drop to 18-20° C. El Nino weather phenomenon that affects regions near the Pacific make annual rainfall unpredictable and can cause droughts or heavy rains.

The Galápagos Islands are most popular for their climate anomaly. Darwin began describing Galápagos with the next remark: "Given that these islands are placed directly under the equator, the climate is far from being excessively hot." In the same paragraph, Darwin identifies the main reason for the dry and moderate climate of Galápagos: "this seems to be due to the low temperature of the surrounding water, brought here by the Great Southern Polar current," today known as the Humboldt Current.

There are countless ways to spend your time in the Galápagos and discover one of the most beautiful tourist spots in the world. These are:

Scuba diving: Galápagos is one of the few places left where you can soak in a variety of marine life in protected waters. One of the most popular diving locations in the world is the island of Darwin, which joins Wolf Island.

Sea Kayaking: This activity is a good way to experience the marine life and the ecosystem of the Galápagos Islands. You must approach the sea turtles, sea lions, pelicans and other animals without disturbing them.

Camping: For those looking for a little more intimate experience, the best method is camping. There are many sites for camping in the most remote locations in the Galápagos, including the high places of the island of Santa Cruz, accessible on roads leading through farms and villages.

Mountain biking: Mountain biking tours are some of the best ways to experience the Galápagos adventure at its highest potential. Riding through the woods in the clouds, or the firm at height, are breathtaking views.

Bird watching: Galápagos Archipelago has one of the best birding destinations in the world. Here there are about 120 species of birds, some of which are endemic. Other species are very rare in the world, but due to isolation from the mainland, are not afraid of humans and can be observed more closely. The most important species are penguins, frigates, albatrosses, gulls, pelicans, cormorants and Galápagos hawks.
