Albania, a cheap alternative to its neighboring countries
Also nicknamed 'The Sleeping Beauty', Albania is a country of only 28,000 square kilometers, but has some well-preserved historic towns, some mountainous areas and most importantly, the Adriatic and the Ionian coast.
Albania is a cheap alternative to its neighboring countries: Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. The beaches and the architectural relics are illustrating the various influences in its history: Greek, Roman, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Italian are just some of the things you can enjoy if you choose to spend a holiday in Albania.
The most important sights in Albania are the Adriatic Coast, where besides the beaches, you can also visit Buna River and the city of Shkodra, the Ionian Coast, famous for its rocky shores and waves which can reach even four meters tall, the city of Butrint, which is entirely under the UNESCO patrimony since 1997, Gjirokastra, a city that was under the Ottoman rule for more than five centuries, and Saranda, a center of the Greek minority in Albania.
The road routes are either via Bulgaria, Macedonia or Serbia and you do not need a visa or a passport to visit it.
