A little piece of Siena
Siena is in the top most beautiful three cities from the north of Italy. Probably only Florence can compete with Siena. About half of Arezzo, with only about 50 thousand inhabitants, hosts during the summer period four times more tourists than city residents.
The etymology of the name is quite controversial. Some believe that the name is rooted from Etruscan Saina, after one of the Etruscan tribes who inhabited the region, others believe that it's named after a tribe of Gauls Senones. One thing is certain - the current city is built on the ruins of a village founded by Emperor Augustus, about the year 60 BC. The town's name was Saena Julia, mentioned a century later, in AD 70.
From Arezzo, Siena is about 90 km away, and from Siena to Florence and about 80 km. A sort of triangle of Tuscan beauty. On the road between Arezzo and Siena, travelers are passing through the wine country (almost national) of Italy, Chianti. The vineyard capital of wine is a small town between the two cities, called Castelnuovo Berardenga, worth visiting even if only for good and cheap wine that can be bought in this area.
In Siena you should only eat in San Giuseppe grotto. Cheeses served as a digestive are the best that can be eaten in Italy.
Siena was the city of the Strozzi family, who fought for centuries with the Florentine family of Medici. The center of the town, which is the oldest neighborhood, is a breathtaking beauty. Although the city legends say that they are descended from the son of Remus, Senius, it is, of course, a lie, given that the most noble families of the city had Lombard origins.
