11 things you don't know about Amsterdam

Amsterdam is certainly a fascinating city. Leaving aside the numerous population freedoms, there are a lot of things you can do there and many tourist attractions to visit. But let's have a different insight into Amsterdam! Here is a list of 11 things you should know about Amsterdam, if you are preparing for a holiday in this city!

1. Do not rent a bike in Amsterdam! Trafficking in Amsterdam is dominated by bicycles, not cars. From endless tracks to storey car parks, it is a real paradise for cyclists ... but not so great to rent a bike, though easy and affordable, you'll stand in interminable queues.

2. Take a walk to the Red Light District during the day! Prostitution is legal in Amsterdam and the Red Light District neighborhood is famous for this. For the curious city tourists, rather than the red windows, the day is a good time to visit the neighborhood, especially since it is one of the oldest and finest in the city.

3. Drink a small beer! Residents of Amsterdam are big beer drinkers ... in a small size! Unlike most european countries, you will find beer glasses a quart because a smaller glass keeps the beer cooler and fresher for a longer time!

4. Eat mayonnaise on french fries! 'Vlaamse fites', Flemish fries with mayonnaise, are a must in Amsterdam. The culinary culture of the place is not extraordinary, but the potatoes, that you can find anywhere, are perfect for a snack on the ride.

5. Eat Indonesian Rijsttafel! If you want to treat yourself, however, you must go to a restaurant and order an Indonesian Rijsttafel rice meal. For about 15 euros, you get a bowl of rice and between 8 and 20 euros, smaller bowls, with all sorts of Indonesian goodies for a big meal.

6. Do not smoke ... or? We all know that in the cafes in Amsterdam, smokers can enjoy cigarettes and marijuana, but in 2008 Amsterdam adopted a law that banned smoking in enclosed spaces. So you can smoke everything in a cafe ... except a cigarette!

7. Speak English anywhere! If other nationalists prefer you to speak their language, the Dutch use English in most of the places frequented by tourists.

8. There are no office buildings in the center! If you expect offices, banks and other buildings in the center variety, Amsterdam will surprise you with their absence. Instead, you can only admire the 17th-century houses, hotels and shopping streets.

9. Take a walk on the canal on the first day! The historic center of Amsterdam is paved with channels you can cross with various boats. It's not Venice, but this way you can find that which are the major attractions there and you will soon get used to the city!

10. Visit the city for free! Free tours to visit the city are actually a kind of organized walks, which, in 3 hours, give you the chance to see the most important sights ... tips are obviously encouraged!

11. Visit the things outside the town! If you've already seen all you could see of Amsterdam, then you must exit the town and visit Castle Muiderslot or the biggest flower market in the world - Alsmeer Flower Auction.
