Ukrainian ceasefire broken by shelling
The Ukrainian president’s efforts to move a step closer to peace in his country had been seriously shaken by renewed hostilities and lack of support from Moscow.
The seven-day ceasefire that began on Friday, in Ukraine, has fallen due to cross-border shelling between Russia and Ukraine.
Both Russian and Ukrainian border checkpoints in the Rostov region had been attacked, casualties resulting from both sides. The attackers were on Ukrainian territory and Kiev blames separatists fighters for the incident.
‘Following the firing of automatic weapons, we started the evacuation. After that we heard the loud blasts and the whiz of fragments,’ said a Russian customs officer regarding the attack on the border checkpoint.
Another incident over the weekend was the disapearance of a Mi-8 military helicopter that was found one day later with all of its 3 crew members dead. The reason why the helicopter crashed remains unknown.
Meanwhile, although Russia’s Vladimir Putin claimed he will back up Poroshenko’s plan to install peace, he mobilized more than 65,000 military troops near the Ukrainian border.
In an effort to help Ukraine, the US had frozen the assets of seven pro-Russian leaders.
