Drone attacks could lead to ‘endless war’

The Obama administration has no reluctance when it comes to using unmanned machines in military operations, although the consequences might lead to an unprecedented crisis, as a US official warns in a report.

US drone air strikes could create a ‘slippery slope’ toward an endless war as other countries might follow the country’s example and make use of unmanned armed machinery.

The report came as a response to the ongoing negotiations whether the US should send drones in Iraq to help the government fight back ISIL extremists.

We are concerned that the administration’s heavy reliance on targeted killings as a pillar of U.S. counter terrorism strategy rests on questionable assumptions and risks increasing instability and escalating conflicts,’ said the report written by 10 US officials, including high-ranking Pentagon representatives.

One viable solution would be to develop and agree upon some international standards for the use of such weapons, before terrorist groups acquire their own such machines.

Also, greater transparency on past and future drone air strikes is needed so that the public may react to such decisions.
