Worst ever Ebola outbreak is out of control
The biggest Ebola disease outbreak in history is wreaking havoc in West Africa as it killed over 600 people since February and the death toll is still rising.
The World Health Organization, although initially reserved about talking of the gravity of the situation, now admitted that the Ebola outbreak is spreading out of control.
The biggest obstacles are posed by locals who are suspicious and hostile towards doctors and hospitals and many refuse to take sick relatives to treatment and even hide them.
‘It’s probably going to be several months before we are able to get a grip on this epidemic and this outbreak and reduce the numbers of cases, so there will be ups and downs, that’s a normal part of this outbreak,’ explained Dan Epstein, spokesman for the World Health Organization.
Moreover, as the disease spreads extremely rapidly, many of them also become infected. The disease can be transmitted even by touching the body of those who died.
It is presumed that the virus had been brought by someone from the jungle and from then on it has infected hundreds of people. The Ebola virus had hit, over time, Uganda, DR Congo, Sudan, Gabon, South Africa (ex-Gabon), Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Guinea, but the current West Africa outbreak is the worst ever.
The disease causes hemorrhagic dehydration and patients bleed from their eyes, nose and ears. There is no existing treatment or vaccine for the virus and patients bleed from their eyes, nose and years until, ultimately, they die. The survival rate is extremely low as only 1 in 10 people survives. That brings fatality to 90% of the Ebola cases.
The only solution doctors have is to install a quarantine and hydrate the patient.
