Ukraine, on the eve of civil war
The conflict between pro-Russians and pro-unity Ukrainians has begun to gain greater proportions as it spreads from east to south. The clashes are also growing in violence after bloody battles in Odessa left dozens dead and many more injured.
A trade union building was set on fire in Odessa, near the Crimean border, reportedly by pro-Kiev demonstrators. The pro-Russians who were hiding inside, were either burnt alive or left with no choice but to jump out through the windows, in a desperate attempt to save themselves. 40 of them have died.
Now, people turn towards the new police chief of Odessa, Ivan Katerinchuck, who promised to bring justice to those who perished.
70 pro-Russians detained on Friday were freed from a prison after fellow rebels broke through the gates of the prison compound.
Although the Ukrainian military was sent to release cities from under the pro-Russian occupation, the later fought back, destroying two helicopters. Gunfire was heard throughout the night.
