Santiago de Compostela train crash: human error!

Spanish authorities have finally reached a verdict in the case of the tragic train accident that happened last year near Snatiago de Compostela, Spain. Investigators concluded the driver is fully responsible for the crash that killed 79 people.

The 266 page report made by investigators revealed the train driver, Francisco Jose Garzon drove the train well above the speed limit in the area where the accident occurred. He was also speaking on the phone with the train conductor at the moment.

The high speed train that crashed was travelling at 190 kilometers per hour despite the speed limit was set at 80 in the dangerous curve. The force of collision was so big that four carriages flipped once and one was ripped apart.

Francisco Jose Garzon is now facing 79 counts of negligent homicide for his role in the worst Spanish train accident in four decades. The Spanish Rail Way Commission also brought a few recommendations on how to improve safety such as automatic breaking systems to slow down trains travelling too fast and onboard communications systems.

The Spanish national operator even announced it will invest almost 4 million euros on surveillance technology in all bullet train cabins.
