Nigerian football fans blasted in suicide attack
20 Nigerian people, including young children, have lost their lives and another 30 were seriously injured after a suicide bomber blasted through the crowd that was viewing the World Cup match between Brazil and Mexico.
The tragedy struck in the northeastern part of the country, a region that has been terrorized over the past five years by the Boko Haram militant group, an Al-Qaeda-related group.
Those who survived the blast tell of a tricycle taxi driver detonating the explosives near the group of football fans.
Many of those injured have lost limbs and the death toll is expected to rise as some injuries might be potentially fatal.
‘It was just like a flash of light and many people were killed. Some had to be amputated and suchlike. But thank God mine was a lesser injury,’ remembered one survivor.
Many outdoors World Cup viewing centers had been closed in Nigeria due to fears of Boko Haram attacks. The group considers football to be ‘un-Islamic’ and, as such, football fans may become targets of their attacks.
