Arrested for stealing over 100 pounds of gold
34-year-old Raonel Valdez-Valhuerdis (photo) was brought back to the U.S. and booked into Miami-Dade County Jail after he was detained by the authorities in Belize in February, according to a U.S. Marshalls Service report.
“Working in conjunction with the government of Belize, we have brought back to South Florida a violent fugitive who will be prosecuted for his alleged crimes,” said Amos Rojas, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Florida, in a press release.
The man is accused of stealing gold worth about $3 million after he, along with two other people robbed a Bolivian export company employee that was handling the gold to be sent to an Opa-Locka refinery.
Valdez was caught by the authorities shortly after the robbery took place and released on bail in March. The authorities lost then track of his GPS monitor and he disappeared.
