500,000 Irak civilians plus army fled Mosul, Bagdhad next
As many as 500,000 Iraqis have fled the town of Mosul as, on the other side of the city, extremist militants are swarming in by the hundreds.
The string of violence from the past days in Iraq's second largest city has resulted in 'a high number of casualties among civilians,' as the International Organization for Migration reported.
Ongoing fights have rendered the city's four main northern hospitals inaccessible. In lack of other solutions, some mosques have been taking in casualties and doctors are performing surgeries on site.
People's urge to flee the city led to the formation of huge lines at checkpoints. They are trying to reach safety in the nearby Kurdistan region, where three cities have established refugee camps to take in the Mosul locals.
The US continues to provide 'some security assistance' to Iraq but hard job still falls in the hands of the government.
However, Iraq's officials seems to be losing control of the entire situation as the armed forces and police had already fled their outposts while the Prime Minister is calling civilians to step in and fight.
While the government is trying to regain control of its own forces, militants have expanded their control area beyond Mosul, to the town of Baiji, an oil-refining center and are now heading towards Baghdad.
'The state is weak. This will be an endless battle,' a deserting soldier stated.
