3 ferry crew members named martyrs
22 out of the 29 crew members of the doom-stricken Sewol ferry saved themselves and left passengers behind while the ship was sinking. Still, not all of the crew members acted the same way.
3 of the crew members on the Sewol ferry have been designated as martyrs today for staying behind and sacrificing their lives to save on-board passengers.
Their heroic actions contrast with those of other 15 members of the ferry staff who had been arrested for negligence.
The 3 martyrs, 22-year-old Park Ji-young, 28-year-old Kim Ki-woong and 28-year-old Jung Hyun-seon will be buried in a national cemetery and their families will receive financial compensation and medical assistance.
Park, a female member of the crew, helped people onto the lifeboat and, eventually, gave out her own life-vest to a student.
Ki-woong and Hyun-seon, a couple that was to get married this year, gave their lives while helping others.
