'Sagrada Familia' reconstructed with ice
Some post-graduates from Finland's Eindhoven University have embarked on a unique journey as they set out to build an ice replica of Gaudi's famous Sagrada Familia cathedral which, at 37.5 meters, will stand as the tallest ice dome in the world.
The construction will commence on December of this year and is to be clompeted by the end of January, 2015. The site will be Juuka, Finland, which is approapriate because the temperature is low during the winter months, raging from -15 to -30 degrees Celsius.
Because ice alone would not withstand to support the scale of the structure, ice packages will be reinforced with wooden fibers and frozen ropes.
The peculiar shape of the towers will be reconstrcuted by spraying water onto molds and then manipulate it into the desired shape with the use of ropes.
The record for world's highest ice dome is currently held by the 'Pykrete Dome' which is 30 meters high.
The ice replica of Sagrada Familia will be open for public starting with January 18 of next year.
