Russian art in Spain

The Spanish city of Malaga will be the first one host a branch a museum of the famous Saint Petersburg State Russian Museum. Some top Russian paintings and other pieces of art will go on a permanent show in the new showroom.

However, art lovers in the south of Spain will have to wait a little longer because work at the new museum is still under way and the place is scheduled to open in early 2015. The State Russian Museum will sent almost 100 works on a permanent loan including paintings from the famous Chagall and Kandisnky.

Works displayed in Malaga will range from Byzantine-inspired icons to social realism of the Soviet era,” part of a statement released by Malaga's city hall. The Spanish city of Malaga has been on a constant struggle to develop its cultural scene in recent years.

The deal with the Russian State Museum also states that more than 500 other works will join the spot in Malaga in a ten year span. Local officials even found the best place to set up the museum. All works will be displayed in La Tabacalera, a 1920s tobacco factory that already houses an automobile museum.
