Ukraine: 49 die in airplane crash, mob rage follows
49 government troops were killed after their airplane was shot down by separatists in what is called the bloodiest event since the current period of turmoil began in Ukraine.
The Ilyushin-76 military airplane was approaching the Luhansk airport, in eastern Ukraine, when it was shot down by separatists with anti-aircraft machine guns. All 49 military personnel on board died.
The event triggered not only diplomatic unrest among European leaders but also enraged the Ukrainian people.
A series of telephone talks were held among French President, Francois Hollande, German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, Russia's Vladimir Putin and Petro Poroshenko, president of Ukraine.
President Poroshenko called on further sanctions to be brought upon Russia immediately, including the termination of 'military-technical cooperation.'
The Ukrainian people, on the other hand, took matters into their own hands and attacked the Russian embassy in Kiev. They torched diplomat's cars, took down the Russian flag from the pole and threw a Molotov cocktail at the building.
A national day of mourning was declared in the memory of the 49 soldiers who fell victims to pro-Russians.
