Toyota recalls more than 6 million vehicles

Toyota has given green light on a 6.5 million car recall around the world. The recall was made after numerous reports showed some models have problems with the engine starter, airbags and seat locks.

Toyota confirmed the world wide recall, but also stated it was unaware of any fatalities or injuries linked to these problems. Reuters reports 27 different models have some faults that need to be fixed. “We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience and concern brought by this recall announcement,” was written in the official statement issued by Toyota.

This is the second largest recall for Toyota after the incident in 2010 involving 7.4 million Corolla and Yaris models. The world's biggest automaker stated the costs of the recall is unknown at this point. In the US, Toyota is recalling almost 500.000 Yaris hatchbacks, Yaris Sedans and Scion Xds. The figure tops 1.3 million when Corollas, Matrix, Highlander, Tacoma and RAV4 are involved.

In Switzerland about 18.000 owners received the recall note. Urban Cruisers and Yaris models produced between 2005 and 2010 were aimed, but also RAV4, Land Cruiser and Hilux models have some problems. Officials have requested Toyota users to check if their cars are among the recalled ones by introducing the unique 17 digit (VIN) Vehicle Identification Number on Toyota's site.

Although the 6 plus million figure is a large one, Toyota can't yet beat Ford. The American car maker has the biggest two recalls in history, and both in the last decade. In 1996 Ford had to recall almost 8 million vehicles, while in 2009 the number topped 14 million.
