Vatican removed over 800 priests for child abuse
A UN committee that monitors how organizations implement the treaty against torture has forced the Vatican, after two days of pressures, to reveal figures regarding priests abuse of children.
According to the Vatican, during the last decade, it has removed more than 800 priests due to child abuse problems.
Vatican officials admitted, after being accused of ignoring the child abuse issue in the 60s and the 70s, that it had made mistakes in the past but that it has, since then, modernized its procedures.
The Vatican’s ambassador, in an attempt to save the organization’s face, explained that, fifty years ago, pedophiles were not seen as criminals but rather as people who only needed a psychological treatment to be cured.
However, the Vatican is still being criticized for protecting predator priests against charges by moving them to other parishes or abroad.
