Swedes: We don't want NATO
The most recent survey in Sweden shows 30 percent of the citizens support joining NATO alliance. The percentage almost doubled in the last year, but Swedes are still against joining the Alliance because of the escalating crisis in Ukraine.
The study was carried out by the Som Institute at Gothenburg University. A similar survey from the same period of 2013 revealed that only 17 percent of the Swedes were in favor. However, the massive increase is not caused by the crisis in Ukraine because the survey was carried out between November and December 2013, just before the “Crimea” situation started.
Swedes don't want anything to do with military situations near its borders of bad economical environments. In the light of last events in Ukraine, Swedish position regarding NATO membership strengthened. Svenska Dagbladet carried out a survey in March that speaks for itself. Almost 50 percent of interviewed Swedes are against joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Sweden and Finland are the only two Nordic countries that are not NATO members.
