Immigrants are invading Italy
Italy is facing a huge wave of illegal immigrants from Africa. Officials have confirmed at least 4.000 people from Libya and other African countries were rescued recently after trying to cross the Mediterranean sea with small boats.
Authorities in Southern Italy are working around the clock to solve the immigration problem. Mare than 600 people in two boats were rescued yesterday by Italian merchant ships. Angelino Alfano, Interior Minister went a step further and called the situation a growing crisis for Italy.
This is just one wave of illegal immigrants from Africa that Italy had to stop. Official figures show between 15,000 and 16,000 migrants from Africa had to be rescued only in 2014. Libyan people smugglers are taking this journey across the sea with hundreds of people aboard medium size boats hoping to reach the Italian shore. “There are death merchants who profit from this people trafficking and who send out requests for help just 30 to 40 miles after leaving the Libyan coasts,” also added Angelino Alfano.
There are almost 500 kilometers of rough seas between Tripoli, Libya and the most Southern point of Italy. The seas are patrolled by increased Italian forces since October 2013 when in excess of 400 people from Eritrea and Syria died trying to reach Italy.
