Germany is fighting alcohol consumption

German officials are worried over alcohol consumption among young people. The drugs commission revealed that almost 50 percent of all young Germans drink heavily at least once a month.

In excess of 5,000 young people participated in the survey and the figures are disturbing. 45 percent of young people between 18 and 25 years old drink heavily and even more alarming is the fact that 17 percent of minors between 12 and 17 years old drink in excess. The same statistic is rounded with the fact that in excess of 26,000 young people had to be treated for alcohol poisoning across all Germany.

Although these results are disturbing, German officials found some encouraging facts. “More 12 to 17 year olds are going without alcohol altogether. Thirty percent said they had never drank alcohol in their lives. A few years ago the same figure was down to 13 percent,” said Elisabeth Pott, Director of the Federal Center for Health Information.

Alcohol consumption among young people is a serious problem in Germany. The German Society of Private Health has been sustaining the “Alcohol? Know your Limit” campaign in schools and high schools, to inform young people over the substantial health risks they put themselves in, by consuming alcohol.
