Belgium – the last quarter finalist
Belgium – USA was probably the most intense “round of 16” match played at the Football World Cup in Brazil. The Europeans managed to qualify for the next round after defeating USA 2-1 in extra time.
It was the fifth match of the round, out of nine, that needed extra time. But even in the first 90 minutes it was a thriller. Both teams had massive opportunities to win, but both had terrific goalkeepers that kept a clean sheet.
Belgium managed to hit first three minutes into Extra time via De Bruyne. The Americans did not give up and tried even harder to level the score, but Belgium took advantage and Lukaku doubled their advantage after a fast counterattack. Green kept hopes high after scoring for 2-1 after 107 minutes of an intense battle. Dempsey missed an extraordinary opportunity late in the game. His ball was saved by Courtois that sent Belgium among the top eight countries in the world.
For a place in the semifinals, Belgium will battle Argentina. The third quarter final is scheduled on July 5th at Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha in Brasilia.
