
Kerry and Abbas debate in Jordan
AMMAN, Jordan — Secretary of United States John Kerry arrived here on Wednesday to meet with Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority. The reason of his visit is to make efforts and save the Middle East peace!
Mr. Kerry interrupted a trip to Rome and began his visit here with a meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan. Mr. Kerry also spoke by phone with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and he will contact again the Israeli leader, after his meeting with Mr. Abbas will be over this Wednesday night.
They will also talk about the release of Jonathan Pollard, a former American intelligence official who was convicted of spying for Israel.
“Jonathan Pollard was convicted of espionage against the United States, a very serious crime, was sentenced to life in prison and is serving his sentence,” Jen Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman, said in a statement. “There are currently no plans to release Jonathan Pollard”.
Mr. Pollard will be eligible for parole next year and could be released in November 2015.
The Obama administration’s immediate focus will be to secure a framework accord for comprehensive peace agreement, in case of releasement of Pollard.
The Israeli-Palestinian peace talks are supposed to continue until April 29.
Israeli officials insist that they made no commitment to release Arab Israelis.
Mr. Kerry is expected to return to Rome, on Thursday morning to join Mr. Obama when he meets with Pope Francis, and he is expected to fly to Saudi Arabia, on Friday to join Mr. Obama in talks there.
