A wristwatch with a vision

Complication Poétique Midnight Planétarium might well be the most beautiful watch to have ever seen the light of the sun.

This work of art is the birthchild of luxury watchmaker Van Cleef & Arpels.

The watch is encased in 18 ct rose gold with double sapphire crystals. Still, the luxury part is yet to come.

It features six planets of our solar system which are orbiting the Sun in real time. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are represented by precious stones. And so are the stars. Aventurine, serpentine, chloromelanite, turqoise, red jasper, blue agate and sugilte glitter on your wirst just as they do in the night sky. The Sun is made of rose gold, similar to the case.

The strap was confectioned out of aligator leather.

The mechanism inside the case is by itself a masterpiece. Because each planet orbits the Sun in real time, some planets, like Mercury, move slower than other, like Saturn. The first completes a full orbit in three months while the latter in 29 and a half days.

Since Uranus takes 84 years to complete an orbit and Pluto 248, tthe watchmaker excluded them since there was no point in watching a planet that you will never see moving.

There are only 396 Van Cleef & Arpels Complication Poétique Midnight Planétarium watches available for sale and, since the company's more standard watches begin at $20,000, this masterpiece is surely not going to be cheap.
