Villareal fined 12,000 euros for racism incident
Spanish football club Villareal CF was fined 12,000 euros by the Royal Football Federation for racism scandal caused by one fan who threw a banana at Brazilian winger, Dani Alves.
The disciplinary body of the Federation ordered the fine, but did not shut down the stadium for the last home game for Villareal this season. The Royal Federation praised Villarea's decision to ban the fan who threw the banana at Dani Alves, for life and it was one of the main reasons the stadium was not closed.
Villareal players have a net worth of 32 million euros according to transfermarkt.de. It's most expensive player is Giovani dos Santos, rated at 9 million euros. According to the same Website, Villareal has a market value of 75 million euros this season and it is surpassed only by seven teams in Spain.
The incident in Villareal sparked a world wide anti racism campaign. The incident, so close to the start of the World Cup in Brazil worries everyone, but Sepp Blatter, head of FIFA said the international governing body will fight against racism. “Racism can only be fought if we apply strictly the resolution taken by FIFA congress last year. It says in cases of repetition, we must deduct points for teams which are responsible for their fans, or eliminate the team from certain international competitions,” said Blatter.
