The 'King of Clay' did it again
He is called the “King of Clay” for a reason. Rafael Nadal did it again and won his ninth Rolland Garros in a decade and his fifth straight at the French Open. Novak Djokovic snatched the first set, but in the end, Nadal was too strong.
He is the ultimate challenge to all tennis players in the ATP tour when it comes to clay. His favorite surface proved to be his strongest ally. Some statistics say he only lost 15 matches in the last ten years on clay, but not in Paris where he only lost one game in the last decade which is unbeatable.
Novak Djokovic tried as hard as he could to beat all odds and the statistics. He even stunned everyone after taking the first set 6-3. Nadal stepped up and the Serbian could not answer back. He lost the next consecutive sets 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 for his ninth title. Being already the most prolific champion at French Open, Nadal proved once more Roland Garros is a forbidden ground for everybody else.
“The name Rolland Garros is very nice we don't need to change anything,” Nadal said smiling. He also added, “I tried to to my best as I always do. I know how to play against him (Djokovic). I need to play at the limit and aggressive, but it's always the same thing. You need to have confidence to feel the ball to be able to produce these shots. I feel like the match was in his hands in the beginning, but since the second set I started to change it.”
Rafael Nadal tied Peter Sampras on the second spot of most grand slam title wins with 14. Roger Federer stands alone on the first position with 17.
