Landon Donovan left out by Jurgen Klinsmann
Football fans and specialists in the U.S. and not only, were stunned to find out that Landon Donovan was left out from the World Cup squad by Jurgen Klinsmann. The final tournament in Brazil would have been Donovan's fourth.
U.S. Sports media criticized Klinsmann immediately after his decision because in the same group he called Jozy Altidore, Sunderland's striker that scored only once this season. Playing in a fourth World Cup would have sent Donovan in an elite group players like Pele or Sir Bobby Charlton.
Donovan has scored 57 goals for the US National team and more goals at World Cup final tournaments than Messi and Ronaldo together. Still, he was very disappointed by this decision. “It has been an honor and privilege to have represented the US national Team in three World Cups. I am very disappointed with this decision. Regardless, I will be cheering on my friends and teammates this summer, and I remain committed to helping grow soccer in the US,” said Donovan.
Almost everyone is standing by the striker and not on Klinsmann's side. Former US player Brian McBride said he could not believe Donovan was left out. “I was stunned. When I saw the news I could not believe it first. I thought it was a joke. He is still one of the best international player. He should be in the team because he can make the difference. A player that can come off the bench and add pace, he has quality and even vocal leadership,” said Brian McBride, to Fox News.
Landon Donovan played at the World Cup in Japan and Korean in 2002, Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010.
