Jack Brabham, Australian F1 legend, passed away
Jack Brabham, Australian F1 legend, died today at the age of 88. He has won three Formula 1 world championships and is the only driver to score a win in a car bearing his name.
Although considered a late bloomer, his 15-year F1 career materialized into 3 world championship titles, making him the first Australian to win the cup.
'He lived an incredible life, achieving more than anyone would ever dream of and he will continue to live on through the astounding legacy he leaves behind,' declared his oldest son, David, who also followed his father into a motorsports career, alongside his two brothers.
Tony Abbott, australian Prime Minister, declared that 'Australia has lost a legend. With his pioneering spirit, Sir Jack Brabham personified many great Australian characteristics. He was respected and admired for his spirit and for his great skill as an engineer.'
After working as a flight mechanic for the Royal Australian Air Force during WWII, Brabham eventually moved to Britain to pursue his dream of becoming a F1 driver. Four years later, he was winning his first world title.
In 1970, 10 years and two more world titles later, Brabham retired.
He was the first person to be knighted for services brought to motorsports.
