First surprises at Roland Garros
Stanislas Wawrinka is the first major name to be knocked out from Ronald Garros. He was also joined by two big names in the women's competition, former champion Na Li and last year's semifinalist Victoria Azarenka.
It is definitely not his surface. Wawrinka never made it higher than quarter finals in Paris and this year's event proves once more the Swiss tennis player prefers hard surfaces. He mare more than 60 unforced errors to lose 6-4 5-7 6-2 6-0 against Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez. “I was trying to find my game, trying to be aggressive, trying to find anything, and I didn't. It was not good at all,” Wawrinka said.
Meanwhile, first and second seed at the French Open, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic booked their way into the second round without losing a single set.
The surprises was equally important in the women's competition. Former champion Na Li was knocked out in the first round after losing 7-5 3-6 6-1. “This is tennis, everyone comes to the court, everyone has a chance to win the match,” said Na Li disappointed after the game.
She is the second top seed that will not get into the second round after Victoria Azarenak. The two time Australian Open winner had to withdrew because of a foot injury. She injured her foot while defending her title at Australian Open and hoped she could get back on the court in Paris, but failed to recover.
