David Villa signs with New York City
La Liga winner with Atletico Madrid but also European Champion and World Champion with Spain, David Villa moved to USA. He will play next season in the second football tier in the US for New York City Football Club.
Despite having the possibility of signing a one year extension, Villa opted to move to another country and continent. “Of course the tradition for the game is different, but that's one of those challenges to encourage the people of New York to gain more enthusiasm for football and become NYCFC fans. I hope people will enjoy the football being played by the team and David Villa,” said the 32 year old striker.
He will be joined in New York by another European legend. After playing his last 13 years at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea, 35 year old Frank Lapard will also play in US, at the same team.
New York City Football Club is a club founded in May 2013. It was bought by Manchester City owners. The sheikhs owning the Premier League club intend to create a global network of teams. They already acquired the majority share at Australian based Melbourne Heat and also Japanese Yokohama Marinos.
