Half a billion dollars as prize pool at the World Cup
Excepting the pride of winning the Football World Cup, players, teams and nations fight also for a huge prize pool. FIFA confirmed a few days ago the participants at the Final Tournament will be rewarded with more than half a billion dollars.
The official figure is 576 million dollars and 507 will almost all go to the teams while 70 will go to domestic clubs. Private owned stadiums will host the matches and their club facilities will be also used by various national teams. The figure was increased with almost 20 million dollars from the amount allocated four years ago.
Before everyone enters the tournament, every team will receive 1.5 million dollars for qualifying and for preparation costs. Once the tournament starts the figures really get big. Every team knocked out of the group stage gets 8 million dollars. Teams that go one step further will be rewarded 9 millions.
The quarter finalists each get 14 million dollars. The fourth placed team will be rewarded by FIFA with 20 million dollars, the bronze medal winner 22 millions, the runner up 25 million dollars while the World Cup winner will receive 35 million dollars.
The prize money will go directly from FIFA to all federations and each will decide the percentage of the prize pool that goes to directly to players.
