Italian police seized drugs worth of 120 million euros

Italy is one of the biggest gates for South American drugs entering Europe. Italian police is struggling to contain the traffic and sometimes the outcome is huge.

In the latest drug bust, Italian police seized almost 43 tons of cannabis. It is one of the biggest drug hauls ever recorded in Europe. The contraband cannabis was found stashed in a Togolese flagged ship called the Aberdeen. The ship was first approached by French officials while sailing new Sicily.

The ship had Indian and Syrian crew according to Vincent Sauvalere, head of operations at the National Directorate of Intelligence and Customs. The ship was brought to the Italian port of Trapani where it was methodical checked while the crew was taken in by Italian officials.

The entire lot has an estimated value of 120 million euros. Allegedly, the cannabis has been sent from Morocco, the largest producer in the region.

The previous drug haul record was set in 1999 when French officials seized 23.5 tones of cannabis stashed in a ship crossing the English Channel.
