Platinum miners back to work after five-month strike
The five-month strike at South African platinum mines which caused a 45% drop in the global supply has finally come to an end after mining companies gave in to the strikers’ demands.
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union and the mining companies involved have signed a new wage deal and have agreed upon other workers’ demands.
Striker Simon Noka said that he wanted ‘to thank God for the five-month strike. It hasn’t been easy, some families were broken. We knew what we were fighting for, plus we had God on our side. He fought for us and helped us win.’
